I think its for the better. The shifter feel of the zf z4mc is better. I think it may have slightly lower gear ratios, not sure if I'm remembering it correctly.
How many miles were on the transmission?

88k according to the listing. And a roadster so probably not ripped on like a coupe would have been.

Alright, back on the horse. We’re still waiting on the gearbox, clutch, shifter components and driveshaft but today I received the trunk floor from bigjae46 who pulled a mold and made a floor for me after pestering him about it for a year. Thanks man! It comes in at 3.5lb and has some extra blocking to be able to install it all from the top inside the trunk. This will drop 10lb from the back of the car, offsetting some of the weight from the bigger quad pipe M3 muffler.

Here’s some quick mocking up:


And the prep work for mounting the passenger side hanger, featuring a rivet-in bracket and locating fixture to get everything in the right spot. Thanks George Hill for validating the fitment of this and the driver’s side drill jig on an actual M3.

Haha...thanks! I wish I had gotten the mold done earlier instead of waiting until late Jun in Houston.

I'd work on the mold until noon when I was no longer in the shade.

A trip to DQ for a blizzard afterwards made everything ok

Now you've got me wanting a milkshake - I think that'll be my next move today.

Took a few hours this morning to make the full commitment. Here we go! 16lbs removed, 3.5lbs added back in:



Carbon panel fits pretty well, exhaust hanger fits great. This should all go together nicely.




And I'm reminded of why welding subframe reinforcement plates is a bad idea (this area had road dust in it, as it's technically exposed to the environment. I will be painting this part up to at least keep that section of corrosion at bay.



Anyone know how the wiring for the M3 evap system is run through/out of the cabin? It looks like it's reasonably different than the non-m and I'm going to at least need to reroute that harness. Could use some pointers as it's hard to find photos of that system.

The hole in the bottom pic has a rubber boot with the EVAP wiring passing through it.

If you use a hole saw, start the hole and the finish with the drill on reverse. Once the teeth start digging into the carbon it will go quick since I think Iaid up core material there. Then 120 grit sand paper to remove any frayed strands.

So I thought I had it straight as bigjae46 says but karter16 that doesn’t look like a big enough wire bundle? That looks like the ride height sensor wires in your car to me. Most photos I’ve found look like yours with that little bundle. My touring has the ride height sensor wires there and it looks very similar.

Do European cars have less wiring for the evap system?

George Hill just pointed out to me that euro cars may not have the evap heater and thus would be missing the thicker gauge wires. Now I’m wondering if the 0401 CSL software even turns the heater on, or if it’s just vestigial.

Bingo - yep that's it.

LDPH is disabled by default in 0401 (K_LDPH_CFG == 0) The code for the module is there so technically I don't see any reason you couldn't enable it in the config. but I bet that's not the path you're thinking of taking

Oh that’s interesting. I mean I’m game to run it if it’s better for the environment (knowing if there’s a leak I mean), but even with LDP enabled it probably still doesn’t have code for the heater portion from DMTL? Serious nuance here. Hah

Haha good call! no point in having it enabled if it's not being monitored for errors! Set the control (CTL) byte of DTC 0x0E to 0x03 :-) Have checked the disassembly and it's just this one code to change.

This is really interesting to me. It looks like the E46 M3s have (3)? configurations:

• CSL - Have NO LDP or DMTL at all
• Euro - Have LDP pre 09/01 and DMTL after
• US - Have LDP pre 09/01 and DMTL after

Early MS42 E46s only had the LDP and I've used Euro software with no fault suppression and didn't have heater faults. Does the Euro software show anything about heaters?

My understanding is that the DMTL is the same thing (essentially) as LDP but with the heater added so 4 wire vs 3 wire.

Another afternoon of progress. Lots of little work on the trunk floor in prep and I decided I should probably test fit the muffler before permanently attaching everything.

Good news, all the measurements checked out and it fits perfect!

I realized in all this that the trunk floor is 12.5lbs lighter and the muffler is … 12.5lbs heavier. Classic.
