If so it seems possible that if the retaining clip wasn't seated properly that could have caused the rest of the destruction subsequently?
It's been a while since I did mine but from memory that seems plausible no?

Update from the shop:
So what happened is the piece in the upper right came out
https://beisansystems.com/wp-content...mage075-14.jpg (https://beisansystems.com/wp-content...mage075-14.jpg)
What is odd is the snap ring is still in place.
All the needle bearings are out in the oil pan so we are going to need to flush the engine oil
https://beisansystems.com/wp-content...mage082-13.jpg (https://beisansystems.com/wp-content...mage082-13.jpg)
The Beisan vanos would work and we can flush out the oil pan.

Edit: unless it’s part of the needle bearing casing?

Call up beisan and see if they can sell you a rebuilt VANOS with tbd OEM pump disc hole size.
I shall have a slightly used VAC exhaust hub for sale soon. Didn’t want to mix parts.
thanks for the help!

Yea not sure what to really think. I don't have enough technical knowledge to refute what they are saying. Once again, this is a very well known and popular shop in SoCal so I doubt they would lie. I've been going to them ever since I had my f80 years ago.
I guess I can find another shop after the fact, but I already bought the needed parts and they just need to install it and be done.
Anyone know of a shop more dedicated to e46 M3s in SoCal, particulary in LA? My friend mentioned JMP but any more recs are welcome.

Lama from beisan sent me some recs too. Odd that the pico rivera guy isn’t on the list below:
Here are some shops. Just let them know you spoke to Beisan systems and I recommended them. And they will take care of you. Best of luck. And let me know if you need anything else.
