You’ll need to source a used brown or green one, those are not available new, I believe that is the consensus.

The black ones do not work, as they switch ground instead of power, they are intended for the non M cars.

Brown = USA, allows you to retain clutch in to start safety (4th pin)
Green = Euro, can start car without touching clutch, no 4th pin, need to code EWS to Euro.

Both work, also with cruise control (some misinformation above) I have green on my personal car.

You can also source them from E39 M5’s, maybe there are cheap M3/M5 pedal assemblies on ebay with the switches still installed.

I have green installed on my Z4M and it works too, as mentioned, I had to code the car to Euro spec

I still have my original brown switch which I thought was broken but it was not. ended up being a wiring issue.

Green Euro switches are still available new. Additionally, from what I have heard, the new black M3 switches (ending in 700) work as well.

The only switch now that will not work in our cars are the non-M switches (ending in 898).

this was false internet information, I actually got TWO of the black flavor, and they did not work.

          Brown - good
          green - good if coded
black - not good, the issue with this is the cruise control, it does not work.

I bought the black clutch switch from bmw, that replace the NLA brown one. Will receive it in 3-4 days. Will keep you updated. Anybody has an image/diagramm on how properly connect it ?

When did you buy these two switches?

Back in 2022 I think. At the time the browns where already NLA and green was still available from FCP.

I replaced the clutch switch with the new black one that replaces the NLA brown one (PN 61319122700 - written 314 on it). The car idles better and no longer stall at stop, but it is not perfect. Maybe i'm too used to newer bmws now ^^. The one that was installed had 180804 written on it.

did you install the gear position sensor on your car?

I just changed the clutch switch. Not sure about the gear position sensor if it was installed with the manual swap or not. It is a zcp also.

I would check to see if you have a GPS installed and if not, reference THIS thread to see if this line of code was changed.

I’m gonna resurrect this a bit to keep the clutch switch conversation going. Nearing the end of my manual conversion, and I can’t get the starter to engage. Here’s what I have:
                            • Black “700” switch that Bimmerworld got from Germany. They called me on the phone and let me know they have difficulty sourcing the right switch due to P/N and manufacturing churn over last several years.
                            • AMS wiring harness kit. Installed according to their instructions, everything seemed to go fine
                            • Gear/neutral switch installed in transmission (the one with the pigtail)
                            • DME flashed to stock manual binary with bytes at 0x4028, 0x67e0, and 0x35da set per the “SMG to 6MT Conversion” thread
                            • Re-coded manual defaults to AKMB, ALSZ, EWS, DCT
After all that, I tested what I could before trying cranking:
                            • Reverse functions work: rear mirror dip, reverse lights, and PDC
                            • I am seeing a discrete change (can’t remember the name of it) in INPA when I go from Neutral to any gear
                            • Clutch switch appears to register digital signal in INPA.
I did try coding the EWS to not require the clutch in (PARK/NEUTRAL_EINGANG=nicht_aktiv) and I got engine crank, but this of course removes clutch disengage required to start. I would prefer to have everything working as it should.

I’m a bit stumped on where to go from here. It must be somewhere in the switch implementation. I might back probe the clutch switch to verify voltages are as expected, then beyond that all I can think is to pull apart the EWS and DME connectors to make sure I got everything in the right place. Pics attached of the switch and how the transmission sensors are hooked up.

That would suggest the wiring between the clutch switch and EWS is incorrect. Even the non-M switch would work fine for EWS interlock purposes.

If you have a GPS and a 700 clutch switch everything in your car should be wired AND coded like a stock MT car, nothing custom.

                                Pin #1 is ground
                                Pin #3 is power
Pin #4 of the clutch switch goes to pin #8 of the EWS. IF you do that then it will crank even if still coded as an SMG.
