Not kidding, you're using it wrong.Originally posted by BL92 View PostWould love those dials, the push button waiting time is painful
With the buttons, there should be no reason to ever press them. Set the temp to your comfortable, press the auto button, make sure the snow flake is on (any time of year), set the vent dial to neutral, never touch it again.
It doesn't get hotter faster if you set it to a higher temperature, and it doesn't get cool faster if you set it to a lower temperature. Just... hands off.
If you really want a short term blast of hot or cold, set the vent dial to hot/cold, then back to neutral once that's over. I think do that once every year or two :P
The only HVAC buttons that ever get any use on my car are defrost and recirc (when there's something organic, than the auto recirculating can't detect).
Trying to use automatic climate control manually is, indeed, painful. But, also, pointless.

That's how I use mine as well, but for the people who are after the minimalist interiors, the dials are the play.Originally posted by Obioban View Post

This looks fantastic

My neighbor had a manual climate control laying around so I swapped it out. The vent selector knob did not work correctly and a quick search showed others having a similar issue, so I swapped it back. Did I miss something?
Regardless, Obioban is right - digital hvac controls are perfect. Manual controls are neat but worse, if you're into that kind of thing.

I could have sworn I remember looking into manual controls a while ago and it was not just a simple swap. The HVAC controls and wiring are not the same as on the digital control layout.Originally posted by SpaceJockey View PostMy neighbor had a manual climate control laying around so I swapped it out. Want to try something different. I am sure the digital is better but always fun to try something different. Maybe have to scrap this idea.Originally posted by SpaceJockey View PostMy neighbor had a manual climate control laying around so I swapped it out. Yeah, that's how I felt. Kind of cool if it were a simple swap, but not really worth any headache to make it work.Originally posted by ucrhamann330ci View Post

A cool little project would be to use a microcontroller to interface the manual controls with the digital controller. that would mean no need to change the mechanism, but still get the manual control panel.2005 ///M3 SMG Coupe Silbergrau Metallic/CSL bucket seats/CSL airbox/CSL console/6 point RACP brace/Apex ARC-8s

I was thinking something similar. There's definitely enough space back there to stuff the (facelift) digital control board + some small uC board. Intercept signal from dials, feed to uC, translate and feed expected button press to digital unit, done.Originally posted by karter16 View PostA cool little project would be to use a microcontroller to interface the manual controls with the digital controller. that would mean no need to change the mechanism, but still get the manual control panel.
Lots of work for a few dials and extra weight from the electronics stuffed in the dash though...2002 Topasblau M3 - Coupe - 6MT - Karbonius CSL Airbox - MSS54HP Conversion - SSV1 - HJS - Mullet Tune - MK60 Swap - ZCP Rack - Nogaros - AutoSolutions - 996 Brembos - Slon - CMP - VinceBar - Koni - Eibach - BlueBus - Journal

Yeah exactly - would really only appeal to people who really want the look of the analogue dials I think.Originally posted by heinzboehmer View PostLots of work for a few dials and extra weight from the electronics stuffed in the dash though...2005 ///M3 SMG Coupe Silbergrau Metallic/CSL bucket seats/CSL airbox/CSL console/6 point RACP brace/Apex ARC-8s

Which ironically would be adding a good bit of complexity to provide a veneer of simplicity.Originally posted by karter16 View Post

Another option is a full custom PCB to take the place of dials unit board that can emulate the IHKA outputs. Man-at-the-start instead of man-in-the-middle sorta thing.
Now that would be cool.2002 Topasblau M3 - Coupe - 6MT - Karbonius CSL Airbox - MSS54HP Conversion - SSV1 - HJS - Mullet Tune - MK60 Swap - ZCP Rack - Nogaros - AutoSolutions - 996 Brembos - Slon - CMP - VinceBar - Koni - Eibach - BlueBus - Journal
